The Story: It Was a Massacre, Not a Riot.

History is often written by those who wish to water it down. For decades, the events of May 31 and June 1, 1921, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, were tucked away in history books under the label of a "race riot."

We’re here to correct the record.

A riot is a disorder. A massacre is an atrocity. What happened in the Greenwood District—affectionately known as Black Wall Street—was the targeted destruction of a thriving Black ecosystem. This was a community where the dollar circulated for 3–5 years before ever leaving. It was a district of self-made entrepreneurs, doctors, and architects who built a kingdom from the ground up.

In less than 48 hours, over 35 city blocks were leveled. 1,200 homes and businesses were burned. Over 300 lives were taken, and 10,000 people were left homeless.
